This book is the best available radical critique of US foreign policy in Iraq. It suggests that the US stop all military involvement and instead massively increase other aid with particular emphasis on medical facilities. The US should honour its commitment to destroy WMD; the author proposes a recommencement of Nuclear disarmament, honouring the NPT and a commitment to strengthening the United Nations. It says that we must unite in the face of global warming and the coming catastrophe.

Barrie Machin 1987 and 2006 The Moral Premises of Nuclear war

We are often trapped in the preconceptions of a system of thought. The arms race is a moral issue with historical, social and psychological roots. In this paper I examine the thinking behind it: the myth of scientific expertise; the myth of the external present; the conceptual status of' the 'other'; the consequences of defensiveness and its acceptable levels; the premise of mass genocide; the rights of children; the damage inflicted by undropped bombs; the harm inflicted by dual codes, and legitimate and illegitimate terrorism. 45 pages

Bush's push for new nuclear weapons

WHO wants a shiny new set of nuclear weapons? Hands up, the Bush administration. Who doesn't? Democrat-controlled Congress.

A statement just submitted to Congress by the Secretaries of Energy, Defense, and State argues that if the "Reliable Replacement Warhead" plan isn't approved, the US might have to re-test cold war stocks, breaching its moratorium. Critics say the new nukes are not needed and will antagonise other countries. So far, Congress has sided with the critics, slashing the proposed budget and calling for detailed preliminary studies.

Building new weapons and refusing to discuss treaties makes it "hard to convince the world we have peaceful intentions", says Phil Coyle of analyst group the Center for Defense Information.

"We have to fulfil our obligations and commitments if we expect non-nuclear parties to cooperate," says Daryl Kimball of the Arms Control Association. President Bush has refused to seek ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban signed by former president Bill Clinton.
